A peak on the Loire
During the 13th Century, Etienne de Champagne, 1st Earl of Sancerre, ordered a fortified castle to be built and thus to fortify the town.
The most important events of Sancerre’s history from the 12th century until the end of the 18th century were the religious wars (1573), and the French revolution when the Royalist fought stoically for the region known as ‘La Vendee Sancerroise’. At this point Sancerre lost its strategic power and was bound by the rules of king despite its rebellious nature.
