Located south of the village of Sancerre and situated on the alluvial plain of the Loire Valley, Couargues offers breathtaking landscapes, often drowned in mist, where boundaries between waterways and farm land seem uncertain. Upstream of Sancerre, midway between its spring and its mouth lies the Loire islands.
Sandbanks, forested islands, grassland, continually changes shape as a result of the river's movement, houses a spesifique flora and flauna; rare and endangered.  Since 1995 the Natural Reserve of the Loire Valley preserves this exceptional natural heritage.  Guided visits and walking paths allows one to discover this last wild European river.
